CARTER BURWELL
By D'Lynn Waldron

A PERSONAL REFLECTION ON CARTER BURWELL
Carter Burwell became the father of a baby boy Tycho (named for the great Danish astronomer) in April 2002, and in the autumn of 2002, he completed the NY Marathon! His recent film, ‘Adaptation’, was also a marathon. He finished recording the score in April 2002, at cut 15 in the very long postproduction of the movie so he could be back to New York for the birth of his son. The release cut in October 2002 of ‘Adaptation’, was version 31, which was very different from version 15 in April. To prepare for this possibility, Burwell had recorded the score in longer segments than might be needed and also in three tempi. This gave the music editor enough music to accomodate the changes. However the changes in the movie meant changes to the score that were not necessarily good for the score. The music Burwell intended it can be heard on his CD.

CARTER BURWELL: BIOGRAPHY
Carter Burwell was born on November 18, 1955 in New York. He is known for his imaginative and innovative scores, with orchestrations that include exotic instruments. Burwell composes for a wide range of genre, including the Bruce Willis action thriller ‘The Jackal’, the thoughtful drama ‘Gods and Monsters’, the political thrillers ‘The General’s Daughter’, and Mel Gibson/Julia Roberts’s ‘Conspiracy Theory’, the war drama ‘Three Kings’, the quirky comedy ‘Being John Malkovich’, the depression era country music saga ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’, the cartoon ‘A Goofy Movie’, and the medieval jousting send-up ‘A Knight’s Tale’.

Carter Burwell’s most enduring association has been with the Coen brothers, beginning with his first film ‘Blood Simple’ in 1984, followed by ‘Raising Arizona’, ‘Miller’s Crossing’, ‘Barton Fink’, ‘The Hudsucker Proxy’, ‘Fargo’, ‘The Big Lebowski’, ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’, and in 2001 ‘The Man Who Wasn’t There’. Carter Burwell became the father of a baby boy Tycho (named for the great Danish astronomer) in April 2002, and in the autumn of 2002, at age 46, the lean, fit Burwell ran the NY Marathon!

Burwell’s recent film, ‘Adaptation’, was also a marathon. He finished recording the score in April 2002, at cut 15 in the very long postproduction so he could be back to New York for the birth of his son. The released cut in October 2002, was version 31, and very different from version 15 in April. To prepare for this possibility, Burwell had recorded the score in longer segments than might be needed, and also in three tempi. This gave his friend, Adam Smalley, the talented music editor, enough music to accommodate the changes. However, these major changes made to the movie were not necessarily good for the score. The music as Burwell intended it can be heard on his CD.
